Court Referee
The Court Referee is able to provide you with a number of options to help expedite your experience in the Salt Lake County Justice Court.
If you have a Traffic Citation issued to you in the unincorporated Salt Lake County and you have a clean drivers history within the last two years you may be eligible to attend a traffic school class on line for $50.00 more than the price of the citation. In doing this the violation will not be reported to your insurance company and points will not be assessed on your Driver's License. You may also check the Standard Bail Schedule (PDF 425k) to see what the bail may be for common violations.
Monthly payments with a minimum of $40.00 a month are also an option or if you would like, you may perform community service at a rate of $8.00 an hour for an approved Salt Lake County Governmental Agency. Fine reductions in accordance with the Standard Bail Schedule could also apply to certain violations.
Appointments are not needed to see a Court Referee just come in during business hours (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Mon - Fri) and the Court Referee will look up your drivers history then tell you what he or she can offer to you on your citation. You may accept the terms of the agreement offered to you or make an appointment to see the assigned Judge on your case.
When an agreement is made you will sign a Stipulation and Waiver of Right and possibly an enhancement form. These enhancement forms are for Speeding in a School Zone, Passing a School Bus with flashing lights, or an Insurance violation.
If this is something that you would like to do you may call the court at (801) 468-2143 or walk in at the Salt Lake County Government Center at 2001 South State Street suite S-4200. If you would like to pay the citation and not talk to anyone you may pay on line.
